Sharing July 4th, 2008
Today's blog is sort of a picture essay of my July 4th, 2008. For those of you who couldn't be here...this is just a taste of what you missed. For those of you that were here...I hope these photos recall fond memories.
July 4th on Ocracoke is always a busy, fun-filled day with plenty of events and things to do. This year the weather was great. Everyone I saw was smiling and laughing and seemed to be having a wonderful time. I was lucky enough to have the entire day off so I tried to make the most of it. I did not get around to every event but will share below photos of the things I saw. There are lots of photos so I apologize if it takes a minute or two to load.
I must note that one of my favorite July 4th events...the Herd Skydivers...was omitted from my pre-July 4th schedule and I also missed seeing them do their thing. I haven't missed them once since I have lived on Ocracoke. This year was the first time. Sorry, guys!!
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the photos. If anyone else has any photos or memories they would like to share, feel free to send them to me.

Really liked this ghost crab with the crab hole to the right.

Happy 4th! Hard to see but a pretty good Fort Macon.

Buried treasure... along with a treasure map....
and the bones of those who have previously seeked this treasure.

I also really liked this shell...I liked it even better when I walked around to the other side...hermit crab!

Very cool lion! Close up!

Here is something you very seldom see on the beach. It is a real, live cat. It is on a leash connected to an umbrella. The cat was very friendly. Several people came up to pet it while I was nearby. It was playfully watching the birds and people and did not seem distressed at all. Even though it was kind of tangled in the leash. Cool cat!

Neat old car. The ice cream truck has been here for about a month!
It has been a really big hit! Hope it hangs around!!
Parade
Watch out for this guy! He WILL give you a ticket! State trooper.

Ocracoke's finest! Volunteer Fire Dept. and EMS. Good to know they are there when you need them. You can't tell from the picture but the sign in the window of the ambulance says "New In 2008". Brand new ambulance for Ocracoke!!
Grand Marshals: Edward & Stella O'Neal. Granddaughter, Nicole, OIR Sales Secretary is riding along.

Several parade entries had statements to make about the beach closures and the piping plovers.

#1 beach for the birds! Ocracoke Working Watermen's Association

The artwork on the pick up was done by kids from the Ocracoke Youth Center. There was fabulous music being played on the float in the picture on the right.

Not sure what the masks are all about but Nick did a pretty fair job playing the bagpipes. It was great to see the Sudan entry. They are all about helping children!

Lemonade anyone? Tribute to Ocracoke Boy Scouts on horseback!

Treasures of Ocracoke included British Cemetery, pirate treasure and the Ocracoke Lighthouse. I wish I had gotten a better angle of the entry in the photo on the right. There is a gas pump with prices posted as "Arm", "Leg" and "First Born". It was a pretty humorous float. Notice the sheik on the right. Ha! Ha!
Fireworks
I have heard many people comment that the fireworks this year was one of the best shows ever!!

Hey! That's my cat!

That is so funny! Your kitty is very sweet. Seems like every time I looked that way someone was petting it. I was just amazed that the cat didn't mind being so near the crowds of people and the water.

She doesn't mind the water because she lives on a sailboat.

Now that I know who she belongs to I understand. It is still an unusual sight. She is very docile. We saw her when you guys were at the horse stand and she was pretty calm then considering she was right next to Highway 12. Sweet kitty!

Thanks for the recap - you did a great job! I did make it to the Herd Skydivers with my son, who was awestruck! I'm so glad they were able to find a pilot last minute to take them up! The young lady riding bareback in the Mounted Boy Scout Tribute is my daughter...they were quite excited and actually won first prize in the "with wheels" category?? Go figure that one! Thanks for another great posting!
